1. Invest in Volleyball Shoes
Volleyball shoes aren’t like regular sneakers. They have increased traction on the soles to help you jump, twist, pivot and maneuver around a linoleum floor, and they’re usually made with breathable materials to prevent things like foot sweat. They’re a great investment if you plan on playing volleyball for a long time.
2. Practice Different Serves
Everyone has their favorite kind of serve, but as a beginner, it’s important not to get “locked in” to a specific style of play. You don’t want to focus so much on your jump serve that you’re left clueless in the middle of a game when called on to make an overhand serve. Build your skills in all areas, not just one or two.
3. Understand the Rules
This might sound like a no-brainer, but the rules of volleyball can change depending on your league or venue. For example, there might be different rules about net contact or centerline faults. There might also be different penalties for rule violations that can affect your eligibility to play. You’ll need to do some research to make sure that you don’t mess up on the court!
4. Stay in Shape
Conditioning is an important part of being an athlete, so don’t think that you need a net or a volleyball to train. You can practice things like wind sprints anywhere and anytime. You can also hit the gym to strengthen your arms, legs and core, and you can get your teammates together to coordinate your side-to-side shuffles, too.
5. Ask for Help
Don’t be afraid to reach out to other volleyball players. If they have a genuine love of the game, they should be more than happy to share their passion with new players. Think about joining a volleyball club, team, league or community organization. If you can’t find an existing group in your area, make a new one! Draw the other volleyball players to you.
These are just a few tips for new volleyball enthusiasts. It’s an exciting game, but if you want to enjoy it to the fullest, you’ll need to be committed to improving both yourself and your performance on the court. Good luck!
